Vintage Galicha Kantha Blanket from north-west Bangladesh

This type of kantha is also known as a galicha; it originates from Rajshahi region, north-west Bangladesh. In Bengali, the word means ‘carpet’. They first appeared around the 1950s and 1970s.
Unlike most kanthas, which are made using running stitch, in the galicha the cross-stitch is not merely an occasional detail but the structural principle underpinning the entire front.
Here is a geometric repeating pattern consisting of cross- or star-shaped medallions and diagonally interlaced grids.
The colourful cotton fringes run along three sides of the quilt.
