Kalotaszeg is a region inhibited by Hungarians in the northwestern area of Transilvania, Rumania. It is well known for their richely decorated traditional clothing having famous admirers among them the component Belá Bartók, whose exhibition can be visited at the ethnological museum in Budapest.
The apron, also called şort or şurt, is an essential accessory of the female costume. In everyday life, it protects the skirt, but in a refined version aprons are also worn on holidays, so that in the apron became the most richly ornamented piece of clothing of Hungarian women. The narrow apron (szük kötény) is sewn from only one panel of fabric and covers only the front part of the skirt. In the course of life, the colors of skirt and apron become usually darker. Young girls start with pastel colors or white tones, the wedding aprons were blue with red embroidery, women in the middle of life wore dark green or dark blue skirts and aprons, and whoever is quite old reverts to black. Today only grannies wear everyday skirts with simple aprons. Nowadays most of the woman are only wearing their traditional folk costumes on holidays or church days.
