The huipil is for sure the most important garment for the woman in the province of Oaxaca, Mexico. The handwoven garment is beautiful and functional and tells a lot of the background of its owner. Every Huipil references to specific regions, indigenous groups, social classes and family tales. It is a a pre-colonial garment, before the spanish arrived the huipil was made with natural materials like tree bark and agave. The different decorations, like emboridery or woven decorations are influenced by the spaniards.

The town of San Antonino Castillo Velasco, a Zapotec community near Oaxaca city, is renowned for their embroidered masterpieces and is particularly famous for their handmade wedding dresses. These dresses have chain stiched embroidery down the front and back of the garment, which can take anywhere from a few days,weeks or months to produce. The embroidery style is called “a ver si puedes” (Let’s see if you can) or “hazme si puedes” (Make me if you can). Both names refer to the difficulty of the embroidery due to the large number of very small elements
