Jacket of the Miao people from Hunnan, South China


In China there are well over five million Miao, they form one of largest ethnical minorities in the country. Miao or Meo is the Chinese term for Hmong. Meo means cat in Chinese followed by the ending „tze“ meaning which makes the meaning slightly different into barbarian. The Miao have mastered the art of handcraft. The lavishely designed wardrobes were then called „Miao Brocade“ by the Chinese. The Miao also mastered the technique to put the wardrobe together once the stiching decoration was completed.
