Hand embroidered cotton bag, Hmong, Laos

20,00 incl. VAT

These cotton bags have been made by the Laotian Hmong. The Hmong are an ethnic minority who fled from China to the neighboring countries in the 19th century. They are decorated with the embroideries that show different scenes from their lives. The “story cloth” of the Hmong became famous especially for their portrayals of the suffering inflicted upon them during the Vietnam War by the Americans. The Hmong resorted to this kind of “storytelling embroidery” because they have no written language.
